Press releases and how they are reproduced
The policy this newsroom applies when reproducing a signed platform announcement, and why the policy is written down.
Nexus does not run a clearnet newswire. Announcements are signed and posted to the login screens of the current mirrors, which means the only people who see them directly are people already logged in. Everyone else reads a copy, and every copy is an opportunity for someone to alter a word.
What preservation means here
A reproduction is worthless unless it is byte exact. A signature covers the text it was made over, so changing a single character, including whitespace, breaks verification. That constrains the format more than people expect.
- Signed blocks are reproduced whole, from the opening armour line to the end of the signature, in a preformatted element that does not reflow or smarten punctuation.
- Quotation marks are never converted to typographic ones inside a signed block. This is the most common way a well meaning republication destroys a signature.
- No line is wrapped, shortened, or elided, even when the release is long and the interesting part is at the bottom.
- The timestamp inside the signed text is left exactly as issued rather than converted to the reader's timezone.
Annotation
Editorial comment on a release is delivered as a separate block underneath it, never inserted into the original and never interleaved. If we think a release is misleading, we say so below it in our own voice. The reader gets the platform's words unmodified and our reading of them clearly separated, and can disagree with the second while trusting the first.
Verify it yourself
The whole point of reproducing signature blocks is that you do not have to trust this site. Copy the block, run it through GnuPG against the fingerprint you have pinned, and you have confirmed the text came from the key holder regardless of what we did to the page around it. If our copy had been altered, verification would fail, which is exactly the property that makes reproduction safe.
Two things that check often gets wrong. A partial copy fails verification in a way that looks identical to tampering, so copy everything. And a valid signature over an old release is still a valid signature, so read the date inside the block rather than assuming a fresh page means fresh content.
What is not a press release
A message posted to a forum by an account with an official looking name. A chat announcement. An email. A statement relayed by a third party who says they got it from an admin. None of these are announcements, whatever they claim, because none of them carry anything you can check. This newsroom reports the existence of such claims when they circulate widely enough to matter, always labelled as unverified, and never reproduces them in a way that could be mistaken for the real format.
